All India Asteroid Search Campaign ( AIASC )- 2013

All India Asteroid Search Campaign :

4 years, 260 teams across India, 1200 observations of celestial bodies and 21 discoveries of asteroids!

All India Asteroid Search Campaign ( AIASC) organised by SPACE in association with IASC ( International Astronomical Search Collaboration). SPACE is the nodal agency for organising asteroid search campaign in India and providing training to students and amateur astronomers for asteroid hunting. The program which was started by SPACE in India in 2010-2011 with an aim to increase the love for science, astronomy and scientific research in Indian students has been very successful in meeting its aim.

After the unprecedented success during the campaigns in 2010, 2011 and 2012, SPACE is now in its 4 year in 2013. The project has provided opportunities to more than 500 students and amateurs in India to discover asteroids and near earth objects. Under the project till now, 1200 observations (Near Earth Observations) and 21 new PROVISIONAL(confirmed) Asteroids discoveries have been done, amongst which one “TROJAN” an extremely rare asteroid was discovered in 2011.

Participating students are given exclusive access to images of the sky taken through 24 inch and 32 inch telescopes located at the ARI observatory in the U.S.A and use specialised software to look for asteroids in the data. SPACE gives the students specialised training in the software and Data analysis to make them equipped for the program. The students get the opportunity to interact with international scientists and work in an international environment of scientific cooperation impossible for the school students otherwise. The new discoveries of the objects and other observations or reconfirmation of the previously discovered objects contribute to the NASA Near-Earth Object (NEO) Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena, CA). Near Earth Objects are comets and asteroids that have been nudged by the gravitational attraction of nearby planets into orbits that allow them to enter the Earth's neighborhood. It is important to keep a close watch on these objects for the safety of earth.

About IASC :

Asteroid Search Campaign is a program by International Astronomical Search Collaboration ( IASC) conducted by Dr. Patrick Miller of Hardin Simons University, USA. The International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC pronounced "Isaac") is an educational outreach program. In this Program images taken the night before with the 24" and 32" telescopes at the Astronomical Research Institute (ARI) Observatory, located at charleston, ILLinios - 61920 . Students make original discoveries of Main Belt asteroids and important observations that contribute to the NASA Near-Earth Object (NEO) Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena, CA).
